What factors enabled Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement to enjoy the success that they did?

MLK and others maintained their dignity while asking for such a small thing: equality. Police and governors, etc. did their part as they were so brutal to the protestors, especially on television. A particularly horrific moment was when the police sicced dogs on the protestors as they tried to cross a bridge (in Birmingham, I think). People couldn't believe how horribly the protestors were being treated, and it turned the tide of public opinion, outside of the South, at least. Many white members of the Clergy and Religious (nuns) joined the protests, which had a significant impact on Americans.
